CHEM 206 - Basic Biochemistry

Prerequisite: CHEM 202, 203 or 215 C or better, or instructor consent. Introduction to structure and chemistry of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and enzymes, metabolism and related areas of nutrition, drugs, genetics, and tissue interaction.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student shall be able to: A. Identify and describe elements, water, pH, coordination compounds. B. Describe carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acid and reactions. C. Identify and describe anabolic metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, porteins, nucleic acids and reactions. D. Identify and describe catabolic metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and reactions. E. Describe chemical effects of disease and nutrition. F. Describe biochemistry of tissues and organs.
